Opencall exhibitions

Exhibition

It is for the second time now since the International Comics Festival KOMA announced a call for artists. We appealed to all the professionals and amateurs, enthusiasts and fans to take part in the festival with the theme MILESTONES. There were just a few limitations: format up to size A2, maximum of 15 pages, close relation to the topic. After receiving quite a solid collection of works, we picked up six the most interesting ones out of it. Among the selected artists, there are illustrators, painters and also enthusiasts that attended a course or just draw ‘for the drawer’. As the matter of elaboration equals the artistic diversity, it is mainly inspiring. So called ‘opencallers’ filled many thematic gaps in our program and we are sincerely grateful for that.

Filip Zatloukal (CZ) - Tutti Frutti
Victory? One-month mission on the private cosmic company´s moon base which has taken part in A Year In A Desert race this year. During the race, held every ten years, racers, organisers and spectators spend one year together far away from civilization in an abandoned small town on the African desert edge. Old cars, stores, devices, all possible to use in this unique recycled company. Coming with a minimum of equipment, they must create cars and abodes from local sources. And why is it, that it is not broadcasted all over the world? No Facebook, Instagram, television or internet. A complete escape to a festival of freedom topped up with rivalry of the racers. Neither a sci-fi, or a post apocalypse, this is real presence. There is a set of four races throughout the year. And the last one is just coming up – three rounds, each much more difficult then the previous one.

Kateřina Buriánková (CZ) – Stonewall Riots
New York LGBT community protested against police abuses quite common in the sixties. The event, lasting several days, known as Stonewall Riots led to progressive changes in legislation and improved social status of the community. Nowadays, there might be another change related to our country. Will we recognize the same-sex marriage in our country legally?

Markéta Tunková (CZ) - Double-Step
Perceive in many different ways. In a simplified form, through a story about boys or a research of the times of strappy sandals. Big things meets the fictional or seemingly insignificant ones. Milestones! They make questions raising . Have you ever encountered something similar before or even experienced one? Have you ever heard of a term double-step? Along with drawing, the author also enjoys walking. All roads lead to...Will she arrive to Rome?

Adam Hubocký (CZ) – Clouds
I am hiding myself behind a code 0951 and pink colour. My favourite way of speaking is comics, my feelings I let them come out in my paintings. Short comics story “Clouds” portrays a young skater boy and his journey around the world which has lost its ancient indigenous roots. His trip embodies an escape from ubiquitous software. Since he involuntarily integrated himself into the centre of the whole mechanism the journey will lead to his destruction.

Jiří Michálek (CZ) - Rope Dialogues
iří Michálek (also called ‘Tapir’) is a versatile artist-maverick. Mostly, most seriously he is focused on classical photography. His passion for comics was initiated after a comics course with Toy Box, a peculiar Czech comics person, who supported and encouraged him. Anthology Conversations From the Ropes is a collection of comments that Jiří’s heard from his workmates working at height in all different parts of The Czech Republic. As the author says: “I write down my daily observations since I was small, and from the age of fifteen, I draw comics for a small circle of friends.” We are now broadening that circle at the occasion of Tapir’s exhibition at festival KOMA..

Iveta Merglová (CZ) - Ema
One day. Rough morning, daily chores and straits. She felt sort of lost in time. Her job seemed to be boring, vain and useless. She tried to be with it, she contemplated a lot and had enough time to figure something out, but things are not really falling into place. She is just not able to see and understand clearly the inner nature of things. And then one evening that changes everything. Or nothing at all...
